报告摘要:Land degradation, water quality and quantity, air quality, climate change, soil contamination, and food security are foremost issues of our time. We must be at the forefront in addressing and providing solutions to these vexing challenges that threaten humankind. It is also incumbent that we tackle the research needs in an interdisciplinary manner by forging collaborations with natural scientists, social scientists, engineers, and humanists. We must also communicate the results and solutions in a meaningful way to decision makers and the public. This presentation will focus on the impacts of a changing climate on coastal resiliency, soil and water contamination, cycling of nutrients, food production, and national security. Opportunities will be presented on how to address some of these complex challenges.
Donald L. Sparks教授个人介绍:
Dr. Donald L. Sparks is the Unidel Chair in Soil and Environmental Chemistry at the University of Delaware as well as a Francis Alison Professor, one of only 16 active faculty members who have received the university’s highest faculty honor. Dr. Sparks is one of the most celebrated soil and environmental scientists in the world. His research has been cross-disciplinary, contributing not only to the field of soil science, but also to geochemistry, environmental chemistry, and environmental engineering. Over a 43 year career at the University of Delaware, he and his research group have made seminal and transformational discoveries in the areas of kinetics of geochemical processes, molecular scale investigations of metal and nutrient fate and transport in soils and water, soil remediation, and climate change impacts on soils. The citation for his recent receipt of The European Geoscience Union’s Philippe Duchaufour Medal noted his outstanding research in the field of soil chemistry and environmental chemistry and its significant impact on the development of soil science. providing a legacy of innovation and advancement.
Dr. Sparks is the author of two widely adopted textbooks, Kinetics of Soil Chemical Processes and Environmental Soil Chemistry (three editions ), 15 edited books, 65 book chapters, and 300 refereed papers. He has edited 131 volumes of Advances in Agronomy , the most prestigious serial review in the field. He has presented his research findings at national and international symposia, and served as a distinguished lecturer at 116 universities and institutes in the United States, Canada, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and Europe. He has served on the editorial boards of multiple refereed journals in soil science and geochemisty. Dr. Sparks has received over $100 million in grants to support his research.
One of Dr. Sparks’s most significant contributions is the training and mentoring of over 100 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Through this role, he has inspired a new generation of soil and environmental geochemists. His students have been recipients of major fellowships and awards; three of them received the U.S. Presidential Career Award in Science and Engineering. His students hold faculty positions at leading private and public academic institutions and research positions at federal agencies and corporations. For his efforts in advising and mentoring, he was the first recipient of the University of Delaware’s doctoral mentoring award and received the Geoffrey Marshall mentoring award from the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools.
Dr. Sparks has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. These include: Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Soil Science Society of America, American Society of Agronomy, Geochemical Society of America, and the European Association of Geochemistry; Geochemistry Medal from the American Chemical Society, Sterling Hendricks Medal from the USDA, Liebig Medal from the International Union of Soil Sciences, Environmental Quality Research Award from the American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Research Award from the Soil Science Society of America, The Clay Minerals Society Pioneer in Clay Science Award, Einstein Professor from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a McMaster Fellowship from Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. Throughout his career, he has had many collaborations with Chinese scientists and has hosted numerous visiting scholars. He is an Honorary Professor at five major Chinese universities and Chinese Academy of Sciences Institutes.
Dr. Sparks was the Founding Director of the Delaware Environmental Institute and has served as President of both the Soil Science Society of America and the International Union of Soil Sciences. He has served on several National Academy of Sciences committees, including Chair of the U.S. National Committee for Soil Sciences.
